Is it possible to have every construction or renovation project provided with an outstanding lighting system? Maybe, or maybe not. Nearly every project starts out with a desire for excellence, but often the completed job is lacking. Why? What goes wrong? More importantly, what goes right?
For this joint AIA – IES event, we have assembled a group of professionals involved in the collaborative process of delivering quality lighting who will be asking and answering important questions. Our panel includes architect Barry Winick, lighting designer Ann Kale, electrical engineer John Maloney, lighting equipment manufacturer’s representative David Neel, and electrical contractor, Ethan Waterfall.
In Part 1, the panel discussion focused on lighting system design and documentation up to bidding, and considered the following issues:
- When should each player enter the lighting design process?
- When is a lighting designer required?
- Post-specification “value engineering” – is it?
- Who holds the lighting specification?
- Are electrical distributors merely “bankers” in the process?
Part 2 will focus on the process from bidding, construction/installation, and commissioning in consideration of the following issues:
- Bidding alternate equipment
- Coordination conflicts with other trades
- Managing changes in the work
- Commissioning/Project Close-Out Best Practices
